1970 Pulitzer Prize News Photo, Armed African-American Students Exit Straight Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, April 1969
The Cornell African-American students seized the building to protest what they saw as racist conditions at the university. The protestors said they armed themselves for protection after a confrontation with white fraternity students. The picture of armed African-American students in protest at an Ivy League school shocked Americans and made the front page of nearly every newspaper in the United States.
